When the season was on the line, the Saint Michael Mustangs looked to their captain Lucas Nalezinski.
The Grade 12 student didn’t disappoint, scoring twice, assisting on the winning goal and helping his team kill the final seconds on the clock as the Mustangs edge the Blessed Trinity Thunder 4-3 in the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association AAA boys hockey final Wednesday in Grimsby.
“That is your role as captain,” said Nalezinski, who played AAA hockey for the Southern Tier Admirals from age 10 until quitting last year. “When your team gets down 2-0, you have to put your team on your back.”

Zoe Millian couldn’t envision hanging up her skates.
The 17-year-old, Grade 12 student at Saint Michael Catholic High School had planned to give up hockey and concentrate on her studies as she entered her post-secondary studies next year, but after playing for Team France at the IIHF U18 World Championships in Budapest earlier this year, she began to have second thoughts.

Dylan Klassen came up clutch Wednesday to power the Westlane Spartans to a 58-54 victory over the Saint Michael Mustangs in opening-round action from the 68th Annual Welland Tribune Basketball Tournament at E.L. Crossley.
The 18-year-old player scored a team-high 21 points and came up big in the fourth quarter to help the Spartans hold off the Mustangs. Klassen had a steal and score to extend his team’s lead to 53-50 with 2:33 left in the game and then netted the final two points of the game from the free-throw line to put the contest out of reach.
