Mahoney commits to Mercyhurst
By Bill Potrecz - January 6, 2021
Kylee Mahoney didn’t need much persuading to commit to Mercyhurst University.
The 18-year-old Niagara Falls native visited the school last year before the COVID-19 pandemic and came away convinced the NCAA Division 1 institution was the perfect fit for her, on and off the ice.
“They were always on the top of my list,” said Mahoney, a Grade 12 student at Saint Michael Catholic High School. “They are a top 10 school in the nation.
“Last year I was recruited and was able to go and see the campus and watch a couple of games. It was really nice there.”
Mahoney appreciated being able to see the school in person.
“It was definitely a lot better than virtual,” she said. “I got to see everything up close and personal. The coaches gave me a tour of the campus and I saw the dressing room. It was a really cool experience.”
The Lakers, who play in the College Hockey American conference, began the recruiting process last year but only recently did Mahoney put pen to paper to make it official.
“It all happened so quickly, honestly. It really was amazing,” she said.
Mahoney appreciates the opportunity to continue to play while she majors in biology/medical imaging.
“I’ve always wanted to play at the highest level, the D1 level, and a lot of coaches helped me out to get there,” she said. “Everyone around me has supported me throughout my career. My dad (former college player Brent Mahoney) always told me he knew I could do what I wanted to do.”
THE VIRTUAL RETURN TO SCHOOL IN JANUARY– WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW:
December 29, 2020
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last week, the Premier of Ontario announced that beginning December 26, the province would enter a period of additional public health restrictions and protocols to help curb the spread of COVID-19. One of these protocols is related to schools and requires all publicly funded and private elementary and secondary schools to move to teacher-led remote learning on January 4, 2021.
Classes resume for students across Niagara Catholic on Monday, January 4, 2021.
Virtual Elementary and Secondary Schools
Students who attend the Virtual elementary and secondary schools will continue as they did prior to the Christmas break. There are no changes to the Virtual schedule.
Niagara teen turns hobby into home-based business
By Alison Langley Review Reporter
Madi Burnside was excited for the summer.
The Grade 12 student at Saint Michael High School was ready to dive into her new job as lifeguard.
Then COVID-19 hit.
With the lifeguard position on hold, and lots of time on her hands during quarantine, the 17-year-old focused on the skills she’s learned in her high school woodworking class and launched her own business — Madi’s Woodshop.
From a small shop in the backyard of her family’s home in Chippawa, she creates unique items such as pine plaques, signs and blanket holders.
“I love working with my hands and building things,” she said. “I take shop class and I’ve always dabbled in it on my own as well.”
Mother Melissa said Madi has always been interesting in how things work.
“Somebody would come and fix the dryer and have her plastic tools out and asking if she can help,” she recalled.
“She’s always ready to help, she has always been hand’s on.”
Her entrepreneurial efforts have resulted in a busy holiday season. She plans to use funds raised from sales to support her post-secondary pursuits.
Madi has been taking woodworking classes at the McLeod Road high school since Grade 9. She credited teacher Ron Bobyk with helping her to achieve her goals.
In Grade 10, she represented Saint Michael’s at the Skills Ontario competition in the carpentry category and placed third. She earned second place in Grade 11.
