R.J. Derhodge, Sukriti Harjai wrap up junior tour as players of the year

Aug 22, 2018 by Bernd Franke - Niagara Falls Review

Copywrite NF Review PIcture R.J. Derhodge's first Niagara District Junior Golf Tour championship this year was three years in the making.

Before getting two birdies and shooting par on 13 others for a three-stroke victory on the final stop on this year's tour, the Grand Niagara endured two winless seasons on the tour.

Not to mention, more bogeys and double bogeys than he cared to count.

However, between all of those strokes that added up on the scorecard were countless shots at practice, on the putting green especially.

Niagara priest summer chaplain at CFB Borden

Niagara priest summer chaplain at CFB Borden

by Alison Langley - Niagara Falls Review

Father Stephen Bruzzese at CFB BordenFather Stephen Bruzzese has taken a summer sabbatical of sorts from his duties as parochial vicar at Our Lady of the Scapular Roman Catholic Church.

But that doesn't mean he's not continuing his mission to serve.

He's spending his summer as a chaplain at the Blackdown Cadet Training Centre at Canadian Forces Base Borden.

Located in Simcoe County, Blackdown is Canada's largest cadet training centre with more than 3,000 young people participating in training courses each summer.

Bruzzese is part of a team of five multi-denominational chaplains who look after the spiritual and emotional needs of not only the cadets, but also those of the adult staff.

Some scientists believe human activity and technology have pushed us into a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene. What they still need to figure out is exactly when this turning point began.

A team of researchers from three universities in Ontario is betting the answer lies at the bottom of a lake in Milton, just west of Toronto.

R.J. Derhodge has six top-three finishes, including three wins, in seven tour stops

Jul 31, 2018 by Bernd Franke - Niagara Falls Review

Review Photo

R.J. Derhodge remains on course to end his third year on the Niagara District Junior Golf Tour as the boys under-19 champion.

With three stops remaining on the 10-event tour, the Grand Niagara member tops the standings with 702.5 points. Lookout Point's Ethan Siebert is second with 655.6 points, while Matt Gibson, also from Lookout Point, so far has amassed 600 points, good enough for third in the standings.

Derhodge's three tour victories — all in a row — is tops in the division, ahead of Siebert, with two, one official, one unofficial; and Bridgewater's Mike Athoe, one victory each.

On this summer's tour the 17-year-old from Niagara Falls has been faring well on the fairways, even when he didn't top the leaderboard. Before reeling off first-place finishes at Rolling Meadows, Grand Niagara and Willodell, he finished regulation at the tour opener at Rockway Vineyard one stroke behind Gibson who went on beat Andrew Scott in a playoff.

Derhodge and Luke Delgobbo each carded a 5-over-par 77 at Lookout Point, finishing tied for second three strokes behind Siebert on his home course.

SMCHS Grad Sukriti Harjai wins second stop on junior tour

Aug 09, 2018 by Bernd Franke, Niagara Falls Review

sukriti HarjaiSukriti Harjai's short game wasn't always her strong suit when the Niagara District Junior Golf Tour resumed with a stop at Sawmill.

Usually, the putter is the go-to club in the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club member's bag.

With a few exceptions, Wednesday was no exception. While Harjai did make some three putts to finish regulation with a 5-over-par 77, she one-parred the second playoff hole for the victory.

"Unfortunately, I did make some 3-putts on the course, but my putter did save me a lot, especially in the playoff."

A second playoff didn't seem necessary after Megan Miron hit the fairway and Harjai ended up in the rough with their first shots in the playoff.

However, Harjai stayed in contention by sinking an 11-foot putt.

"Good thing I made it," a relieved Harjai said with a smile.

In the second playoff hole, the scene was set for another nail-bitter when their balls landed two feet apart on the green.
