Mahoney commits to Mercyhurst

BP Sports NiagaraHenlee Mahoney’s hockey roots are as Canadian as you can get.

The 17-year-old Niagara Falls resident, who is committed to play hockey at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Penn., first picked up a hockey stick when she was four years old.

“The only reason I started playing is because the house we lived in had a pond in the backyard. My brother (Liam) was always playing so we joined for fun and stuff. Every winter, my dad would set up lights and I would have all my friends over. It was a lot of fun.”

Mustangs advance to BPSN junior final

bpsportsniagara smchs 03312022Hagen Genero was all-world for the Saint Michael Mustangs Thursday.

The 15-year-old, Grade 10 student not only efficiently ran the Mustangs offence, but also knocked down a clutch three-pointer and two crucial foul shots late in the game as the Mustangs defeated the A.N. Myer Marauders 61-51 in a junior championship round game at the BPSN Best of Niagara Boys Basketball Tournament at Notre Dame.

Genero nailed a clutch trey with 1:19 to play to extend the Mustangs lead to 52-48 before later nailing a pair from the charity stripe.

Mustangs match expectations

bpsporst smchs 03252022The Saint Michael Mustangs senior girls volleyball team captured the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association AAA championship recently with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11 and 25-14) victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

“Notre Dame did an amazing job of digging and covering the floor. Just when we thought we had a point, they would scoop it up and send it back our way,” Saint Michael coach Amanda DiCarlo said. “Both teams definitely played with a lot of grit and never gave up.”
