Mustangs advance to NCAA final and SOSSA semifinals

The Saint Michael Mustangs senior football team can thank its defence for a 31-22 victory over the Blessed Trinity Thursday in the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior football semifinals at Kiwanis Field.
The defence forced seven turnovers and scored two touchdowns to send the Mustangs into next week’s championship game against the defending champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With the semifinal victory, Saint Michael also advanced to the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association semifinals no matter what happens in the league championship game.
Heading into Friday’s Niagara Catholic Athletic Association senior football game against the visiting Saint Michael Mustangs, Saint Francis head coach Mark Johnson said he was looking to see how his team stacked up.
Lukas Cuthbert had two rushing majors to power the Saint Michael Mustangs (2-1) to a 23-13 victory over the Saint Paul Patriots.
Blessed Trinity running back Jayden Gurzi-MacDonald was standing on the sidelines getting a cut on his arm attended to when he was approached by a member of the Thunder coaching staff.
Austin MacRae was in midseason form for the Saint Michael Mustangs in their season opener Thursday.
